The track holds a special place in Ziller’s journey, as Song Club directly inspired her to create The Long & Writing Road, a project where she co-wrote 52 songs in 52 weeks with artists across Australia and the US.
Gravel stands as both a product of that inspiration and a symbol of perseverance, reflecting Ziller’s belief in creative connection and courage through the uncertain moments of artistry. “Writing with Rachel was a full-circle moment,” Ziller shares. “I was part of the Australian branch of Song Club. Rachel started Song Club in 8 years ago in Nashville and I joined during covid. Being part of it completely changed how I wrote, it gave me permission to just simply write and stop worrying about the need for perfection. The fact that Gravel came from that collaboration makes it one of the most meaningful songs I’ve written. It’s kind of like a reminder to myself, and now hopefully others!”
Recorded with producer Damian Cafarella at Ziggy Tone Studios, Gravel captures the sounds of Ziller’s past recordings & future direction, with warm tones, acoustic sounds and the space for the song to breathe. The song’s opening line “Well you ain’t really living till you set out to get lost, the wheels hit the gravel and start stirring up the dust” captures the essence of Ziller’s message: growth happens in the doing, not the victory.
